Staying Safe

Staying safe online is an important part of growing up! Just like we learn how to cross the road safely or look after our pets, we need to learn how to be smart and kind when we use computers, tablets, and phones.

Here is a simple guide to help you stay safe online.

1. The Super Safe Three! ✨

These are three big rules to always remember.

  • Don't talk to strangers. Just like you wouldn't talk to a stranger at the park, you should never talk to people you don't know online. If a new person tries to talk to you in a game or a chat, you should tell a grown-up right away.

  • Don't share secrets. Your name, your age, where you live, your school, or your photo are your private secrets. Never share them with anyone online.

  • Tell a grown-up. If you ever see something that makes you feel scared, worried, or sad, you must tell a grown-up you trust. They can help you, and you won't get in trouble.

2. Being a Good Friend While Gaming 🎮

Playing games online is lots of fun, but it's important to be a good friend to everyone you play with.

  • Be kind! Always be friendly and use your best manners. If you wouldn't say it in person, don't type it in a game chat.

  • Play fair. Take turns and don't get angry if you lose. It's just a game!

  • Use the block button. If someone is being mean or saying unkind things, you can ask a grown-up to help you use the "block" button. This button stops that person from being able to talk to you. You can also report them to the game creators.

3. All About Kindness Online 💖

The internet is a wonderful place to share kindness and make people happy.

  • The kind-o-meter: Think of a kindness meter in your head. Before you post a comment or a message, ask yourself, "Is this comment kind?" If it's not, don't post it.

  • Send happy messages. Use the internet to send nice messages to your friends and family. A simple "Hello!" or "You are a great friend!" can make someone's day.

Here are some fun things you can watch or do to learn more about being kind:

  • PBS Kids: Be Kind!: Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood has a great song about being kind. It's a great reminder of how to treat others.

  • Childnet: Smartie the Penguin: This is a fun story about a penguin who learns how to stay safe and be kind online. You can read the story with a grown-up.

  • Be Internet Awesome: This website from Google has fun games that teach you how to be smart, kind, and safe online.
