Homework Information

Spellings

Each week the children are set weekly spellings which are based on the Year 5/6 statutory spellings and the rules they have been taught. Words will be issued through Spelling Shed which can be accessed online- all children are given a login to access the platform at home.

The children have 10 spellings each week which are set on a Friday and are tested on the following Friday.

Children are awarded Dojos (the school's reward system) for scores your child's teacher feel are of merit. These may not always be for exceptionally high scores but may be ones that show progress and endeavour.

Reading

The children are expected to read at least three times each week and for this to be recorded in their reading record. The children's reading records are checked on a Monday by your child's teacher. For each book your child reads, they complete a book review to add to our 'bookshelf' of reviews. They also get to tick off a book on their 'Starbooks' card and consequently receive Dojos.

The children in Year 6 will have a colour banded book as well as a library book and will be given time to visit the library, explore the shelves and get stuck into a good book!

We encourage all children to read to an adult at home which not only fosters a love of reading at home but helps to develop fluency and reading skills. As you are reading, discuss the text with your child and clarify any unknown words as this helps them to understand the text better. Ask them who their favourite character was and why and which part of the story was most exciting? Why?

What did they learn from the facts in their non fiction book?

It's always good to encourage your child to vary the type of books they read. Although reading J K Rowling or David Walliams may be 'their thing', they can learn so much more by exploring so many brilliant authors/genres. Below you can find a link to a '100 Books to try before you leave year 6'. Take a look and plan your next book... it may be your new favourite book or author!

Homework books for English and Maths

The children mark their Maths and English homework books each Friday and are then set their next week's homework the same day. Their pages are posted on Class Dojo each Friday too.

Please encourage them to complete their homework and ensure they bring this in as completing homework fosters our school value of Ownership!

Times Tables:

We encourage the children to work on their times tables using the link below. The children should have their passwords from their class teacher. If they have misplaced their password or you need a replacement one, please speak to your child's teacher.
