Each week the children are set weekly spellings which are based on the Year 5/6 statutory spellings and the rules they have been taught in the No Nonsense Spellings (including spellings with prefixes and suffixes).
The children have 20 spellings each week which are set on a Tuesday and are tested on the following Tuesday. Children are awarded Dojos (the school's reward system) for scores your child's teacher feel are of merit. These may not always be for exceptionally high score but may be ones that show progress and endeavour.
The children are expected to read at least three times each week and for this to be recorded in their reading record. The children's reading records are checked on a Monday by your child's teacher. For each book your child reads, they complete a book review and get to place a tick on their reading chart and consequently receive Dojos.
Discuss the text with your child and clarify any unknown words as this helps them to understand the text better. Ask them who their favourite character was and why and which part of the story was most exciting? Why?
What did they learn from the facts in their non fiction book? It's always good to encourage your child to vary the type of books they read. Although reading J K Rowling or David Walliams my be 'their thing', they can learn so much more by exploring so many brilliant authors/genres.
Homework books for English and Maths
The children mark their Maths and English homework each Friday morning and are then set their next week's homework. Their pages are posted on Class Dojo each Friday too.
Please encourage them to complete their homework and ensure they bring this in.
We encourage the children to work on their times tables using the link below. The children should have their passwords from their class teacher. If they have misplaced their password or you need a replacement one, please speak to your child's teacher.
