Gaming Online - Things to Think About

🎮 Safe Gaming

  • Only play age-appropriate games.

  • Never chat to people you don’t know.

  • Always check with an adult before spending money online.

✅ Key Safety Tips to Remember

Here are some rules you might follow when gaming that help you stay safe and have fun:

  1. Keep personal info private
Don’t share things like your full name, address, school name, phone number, or birthday with people you don’t know.

  2. Use safe usernames & pictures
Choose something that doesn’t give away too much (like your name or where you live). Use pictures that are safe, kind, and don’t show too much personal info.

  3. Use privacy & security settings
Many games have settings to control who can contact you, who can see what you’re doing, who can join your game. Make them as private as possible.

  4. Think before chatting
If the game has a chat, voice or text, be kind. Don’t talk to people you don’t know much. If someone says something that makes you feel uncomfortable, tell a trusted adult.

  5. Watch out for in-game purchases & ads
Some games let you buy things with real money (skins, coins, boosts). Make sure you ask a parent first. Also, be careful with adverts—some might try to trick you (“Click here to win!”) or take you outside the game.

  6. Game in common areas
If possible, play in a room where a grown-up can see or hear what you’re doing. That way if anything happens, someone can help.

  7. Speak up if you’re worried
If something happens in a game that upsets you, or someone does something weird, tell a parent, teacher, or another adult you trust. You won’t get in trouble for telling. It’s better to talk so you can stay safe.

Be Kind Online

Being kind online is just like being kind in person! It's all about using your words and actions to make others feel happy and safe.

1. Use Kind Words 🗣️

  • Think before you type. Before you send a message, ask yourself: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it helpful? If the answer is no, don't send it!

  • Write nice comments. When you see a friend's picture or video, you can say something like, "That looks so fun!" or "You're a great artist!" It makes them feel good.

  • Don't say anything mean. Words can hurt, even online. Never call someone a bad name or say something that would make them feel sad.

2. Respect Others' Creations 🎨

  • Ask permission. If you want to use a picture or video that someone else made, always ask them first.

  • Don't copy. It's not fair to pretend that someone else's work is your own. It's much more fun to create your own things!

3. Know What to Do If You See Something Unkind 🛑

  • Tell a grown-up. If you see someone being mean online, or if someone is being mean to you, tell a parent, teacher, or another trusted grown-up right away. They can help you.

  • Don't join in. If you see people being unkind, don't join in. Instead, you can be a helper by telling them to stop or by getting help from a grown-up.

Cyberbullying

Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP)If you have any concerns, report them here.

What is Cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is when someone is mean to you online. This can happen on a computer, a tablet, or a phone. It can be through messages, pictures, or when playing games.

Being a good friend online means being kind and respectful to everyone.

What to Do if Someone is Mean to You Online

It's not your fault if someone is mean to you online. Here's what you can do:

1. Tell a Grown-Up. Tell a parent, a teacher, or another grown-up you trust right away. They can help you.

2. Don't Reply. It can be tempting to reply, but it’s best to ignore the mean message or comment. Do not reply to the person who is being mean.

3. Block and Report. Most games and apps have a way to block or report someone. Blocking them means they can't talk to you anymore. Reporting tells the game's grown-ups that someone is being unkind.

Mean Things That Can Happen Online

  • Name-Calling: When someone calls you mean names in a chat or a message.

  • Griefing: This happens in games when someone tries to make the game less fun for you on purpose. For example, they might destroy something you built or keep getting in your way.

Remember, it's never okay for someone to be mean to you online, even if it's "just a game."

Be a Kind Online Friend!

Just like in real life, it's important to be kind online.

  • Think Before You Type. Would what you are about to say make someone sad? If the answer is yes, don't say it.

  • Use Kind Words. Use polite and friendly words when you talk to others.

  • Help Others. If you see someone else being treated unkindly, tell a grown-up about it.

Fun Videos About Being Kind Online

Here are some friendly videos that can help you learn more about being kind online:

Trolling

Being a Good Friend Online

Have you ever played a game online and someone said something unkind or tried to spoil the fun for everyone else? This is sometimes called trolling. It’s when someone says or does mean things on the internet just to make other people upset or angry.

Let's learn how to deal with this and make sure we are always kind online!

What is Trolling?

Trolling is like being a sneaky trickster online. People who troll might:

  • Say mean things to you or your friends (name-calling).

  • Try to annoy you or make you sad.

  • Spoil a game for everyone by being silly or unfair (griefing).

Trolls often hide behind a screen and wouldn't say these things in real life. Remember, their words are not true!

What to Do If You See a Troll

If someone is being a troll, here are some things you can do:

1. Don't Reply! 🚫

Trolls want a reaction. The best thing you can do is not reply to them. If you don't give them attention, they will usually stop and go away.

2. Block Them 🧱

Most games and websites have a "block" button. If you block someone, you won't be able to see their messages anymore. It's like building a wall so their unkind words can't reach you.

3. Tell a Grown-Up 🗣️

If something online makes you feel sad, angry, or scared, it's really important to tell a grown-up you trust, like a parent or a teacher. They can help you with what to do next.

4. Be a Kind Friend 🤗

The best way to fight against trolls is to be a good friend. If you see someone being kind online, tell them! Spreading kindness is always a great idea.
