Intent

Art has a significant and valuable role to play in the overall ethos of this school. Art is an ongoing process through which all children are given opportunities to develop specific skills, knowledge and understanding to enable them to work in variety of media, style and form.  It enables children of all abilities to use their creative imagination to achieve their potential with guidance and given criteria. Art is carefully planned through guidance from the National Curriculum and Chris Quigley Milestones so that it is closely linked with topic themes. This policy will form the basis upon which we map out the guidance for Art at Key Stage 2.

Implementation

Art is taught in blocked themes to ensure greater depth of skills. The children learn about artists past and present, observing and discussing samples of their work looking for key features and themes. Art skills, linked to the artist, will then be discreetly taught and refined in small pieces of work leading up to the production of a final piece. This will be displayed in school or showcased to parents. Finally, children will self-evaluate their art, reflecting on the skills learnt and their final outcome.  

Sketchbooks are used to record, collect and explore ideas and images and other information relevant to current and ongoing work.  The sketchbook is an essential and personal record although teachers will teach children when it is appropriate to use them and for what purposes including reviewing the contents to ensure the purpose of the sketchbook at frequent intervals.  It is also essential that all children use a sketchbook that is similar in format. 

Each concept is taught through clear skill progression which is guided by Chris Quigley Milestones. The Milestones are organised into two year blocks so that children have enough time to revisit and refine specific skills so that they remain in the children’s long term memory (LTM). Teachers use these to plan their lessons to ensure they pitch learning appropriately and differentiate accordingly.

Impact

Through delivering our Art Curriculum, we will ensure that: 

• children have knowledge of different famous and local artists and what their work represents. 
• children have had the opportunity to experience and master basic skills using a range of different media. 

• children will have had opportunities to copy different artists, adapt artists work and create their own pieces of art inspired by artists they have studied. 
• children will have had opportunities to present their work to a wider audience e.g. parents, the community etc.
