The Listeners - by Walter de la Mare

L.I: To perform a narrative poem.

Watch ‘The Listeners’ by Walter De La Mare. This shows the oral performance skills that I would like the you to aim for when performing your own poems.  Note the use of pace, pauses, pitch, emphasis and volume.

You will be performing your poem today: you can either create and film your own shadow puppet performance or perform and record a voice over using the original video.

It is essential that you explore the following when performing.

• Pace

• Pauses

• Punctuation

• Pitch

• Repetition

Consider the punctuation you have used in your poems as instructions for performance.

Are there elements of your poems that would work better with more than one voice / echo / layering? How might volume be important?

Please record your performance of your poem and send to your class teacher.
